Ingredients:

  • 1 cup (240 ml) unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) honey (or agave syrup)
  • 1/2 cup (115 g) unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (125 g) all-purpose flour (can substitute with whole wheat flour)
  • 1/3 cup (40 g) cocoa powder (unsweetened)
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (90 g) chocolate chips (optional, can be dark or milk chocolate)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease the baking pan or line with parchment paper.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine applesauce, honey, melted butter, eggs, and vanilla. Whisk until smooth and well blended.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Gradually fold the dry mixture into the wet mixture until just combined.
  5. Gently fold in the chocolate chips, if using.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread evenly.
  7. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs.
  8. Allow brownies to cool in the pan for at least 20 minutes before cutting into squares.
