Ingredients:

  • 4 cups (500g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups (360ml) warm water (110°F/43°C)
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons (7g) active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon (6g) salt
  • 1 tablespoon (12g) sugar
  • 1 large egg, beaten (optional for a shiny crust)

Instructions:

  1. In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour and salt, then create a well in the center. Pour in the yeast mixture, stirring with a wooden spoon until the dough forms.
  3. Transfer dough to a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Form dough into a ball, place it in a greased bowl, and cover it with plastic wrap. Let rise for 1-1.5 hours or until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down the dough, turn it out, and divide into two equal pieces. Shape each piece into a long loaf.
  6. Place shaped loaves on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover and let rise for 30-45 minutes until puffy.
  7. Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C).
  8. Using a sharp blade, score the top of each loaf. Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped.
  9. Allow loaves to cool on a wire rack before slicing.
