Ingredients:

  • 2 cups (240g) Bisquick baking mix
  • 1 cup (240ml) milk (whole or 2%)
  • 1 tablespoon (15ml) melted unsalted butter (optional)
  • Pinch of salt
  • 4 cups (960ml) of your favourite stew, gravy, or broth

Instructions:

  1. Ensure your stew, gravy, or broth is already simmering gently in the saucepan or Dutch oven.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the Bisquick, milk, melted butter (if using), and salt. Stir until just combined. Be careful not to overmix – a few lumps are fine.
  3. Using a spoon or small ice cream scoop, drop rounded spoonfuls of the dumpling batter directly into the simmering liquid. Space them evenly so they have room to expand.
  4. Cover the saucepan tightly with a lid. Reduce the heat to low and simmer undisturbed for 15-20 minutes, or until the dumplings are cooked through and no longer doughy in the center. The lid is essential for steaming them properly.
  5. To check if the dumplings are done, insert a toothpick into the center of one. If it comes out clean, they're ready. You can also cut one open to check the inside.
  6. Serve the bisquick dumplings hot, spooned over your stew or gravy.
