Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (15 ml)
  • 1.5 pounds ground beef (680g), 80/20 blend preferred
  • 1 medium yellow onion (approx. 150g), finely diced
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (5 ml)
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard (5 ml)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (2.5 ml)
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder (2.5 ml)
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika (1.25 ml)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 1 cup beef broth (240 ml) or water
  • 8 slices American cheese (or cheddar, provolone if you're feeling fancy!)
  • 4 hamburger buns, preferably steamed or toasted
  • Optional toppings: dill pickle slices, yellow mustard, diced raw onion

Instructions:

  1. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and cook, breaking it apart with a spatula, until browned. Drain off any excess grease.
  2. Add diced onion to the skillet and cook until softened and translucent, about 5 minutes.
  3. Stir in Worcestershire sauce, yellow mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. Cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
  4. Pour in beef broth or water. Bring to a simmer, reduce heat to low, and cook for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until most of the liquid has evaporated and the mixture is slightly thickened.
  5. Divide the beef mixture into 4 portions within the skillet. Top each portion with 2 slices of cheese. Cover the skillet and cook until the cheese is melted, about 1-2 minutes.
  6. Spoon the cheesy beef mixture onto hamburger buns.
  7. Top with desired toppings (pickle slices, mustard, diced raw onion). Serve immediately.
