Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (15 ml)
- 1.5 pounds ground beef (680g), 80/20 blend preferred
- 1 medium yellow onion (approx. 150g), finely diced
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (5 ml)
- 1 teaspoon yellow mustard (5 ml)
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (2.5 ml)
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder (2.5 ml)
- 1/4 teaspoon paprika (1.25 ml)
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
- 1 cup beef broth (240 ml) or water
- 8 slices American cheese (or cheddar, provolone if you're feeling fancy!)
- 4 hamburger buns, preferably steamed or toasted
- Optional toppings: dill pickle slices, yellow mustard, diced raw onion
Instructions:
- Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and cook, breaking it apart with a spatula, until browned. Drain off any excess grease.
- Add diced onion to the skillet and cook until softened and translucent, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in Worcestershire sauce, yellow mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. Cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
- Pour in beef broth or water. Bring to a simmer, reduce heat to low, and cook for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until most of the liquid has evaporated and the mixture is slightly thickened.
- Divide the beef mixture into 4 portions within the skillet. Top each portion with 2 slices of cheese. Cover the skillet and cook until the cheese is melted, about 1-2 minutes.
- Spoon the cheesy beef mixture onto hamburger buns.
- Top with desired toppings (pickle slices, mustard, diced raw onion). Serve immediately.
