Ingredients:
- 4 cups (500g) All-Purpose Flour, plus extra for dusting
- 1 teaspoon (5g) Baking Soda
- 1 teaspoon (6g) Salt
- 2 tablespoons (25g) Granulated Sugar (Optional)
- 1 ¾ cups (415ml) Buttermilk, cold
- 2 tablespoons (30g) Unsalted Butter, melted (for brushing)
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper (optional).
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, and sugar (if using).
- Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the buttermilk.
- Gently mix the ingredients until just combined. The dough should be shaggy and slightly sticky. Avoid overmixing!
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Gently form it into a round loaf, about 1.5-2 inches thick.
- Place the loaf on the prepared baking sheet. Using a sharp knife or dough scraper, cut a deep cross into the top of the loaf. The cuts should be roughly 1/2 inch deep.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the loaf is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Remove from the oven and brush the top with melted butter.
- Let the bread cool on a wire rack for at least 15 minutes before slicing and serving.
