Ingredients:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour (500g)
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast (7g)
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar (12g)
  • 1 teaspoon salt (6g)
  • 1 ½ cups warm water (110°F/43°C, ~350ml)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (30ml)
  • 1 tablespoon milk (15ml) for brushing before baking (optional)

Instructions:

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add flour, salt, and olive oil to the yeast mixture. Stir with a wooden spoon until a shaggy dough forms.
  3. Transfer to a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a towel or plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm spot for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down the dough to release air, then shape into a loaf or rounds. Place on a baking sheet or into a loaf pan.
  6. Cover the shaped loaf and let it rise for an additional 30 minutes.
  7. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  8. Optional: Brush the top with milk for a golden crust. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped.
  9. Allow to cool on a wire rack before slicing.
