Ingredients:
- 1 pound (450g) breakfast sausage, crumbled
- 8 large eggs
- 2 cups (480ml) milk
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 6 cups (about 200g) diced day-old bread (preferably white or sourdough)
- 2 cups (200g) shredded cheddar cheese
- ½ cup (60g) finely chopped onion
- ½ cup (60g) finely chopped bell pepper (optional)
Instructions:
- Sauté crumbled sausage in a large skillet over medium heat until browned. Drain excess grease.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, pepper, and garlic powder until well combined.
- In a large bowl, mix the cooked sausage, bread, cheese, onion, and bell pepper (if using). Pour the egg mixture over the bread mixture and stir until everything is evenly coated.
- Transfer the mixture to a greased baking dish, cover with plastic wrap or foil, and refrigerate for 30 minutes to allow the bread to absorb the liquid.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the cover from the baking dish and bake for 45 minutes or until the casserole is puffed and golden brown.
- Allow to cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
