Ingredients:
- 4 cups (500g) all-purpose flour
- 1.5 cups (360ml) warm water (110°F/43°C)
- 2 teaspoons (8g) active dry yeast
- 1.5 teaspoons (9g) salt
- 1 tablespoon (15ml) olive oil (optional, for richness)
Instructions:
- In a small bowl, combine warm water and yeast. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Create a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture.
- Mix until a shaggy dough forms. Transfer to a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in an oiled bowl and cover with a kitchen towel. Let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough and turn it onto a floured surface. Shape into a round loaf.
- Place the shaped dough on a baking sheet or parchment-lined pizza stone. Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 450°F (232°C).
- Use a sharp knife to gently score the top of the loaf (this helps the bread rise correctly).
- Bake the bread for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown and it sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Let cool on a wire rack for at least 15 minutes before slicing.
