Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (15ml)
  • 1 medium onion, chopped (approx. 1 cup) (120g)
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped (approx. 1 cup) (120g)
  • 1.5 pounds ground beef (680g)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder (5ml)
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper (2.5ml)
  • 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce (425g)
  • 1/4 cup ketchup (60ml)
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar (packed) (30g)
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard (15ml)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (15ml)
  • Salt to taste
  • 6 hamburger buns

Instructions:

  1. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add chopped onion and green bell pepper, and sauté until softened.
  2. Add ground beef to the skillet. Cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned and no longer pink. Drain off any excess grease.
  3. Sprinkle the beef with garlic powder and black pepper. Stir to combine.
  4. Stir in tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, yellow mustard, and Worcestershire sauce. Season with salt to taste.
  5. Bring the mixture to a simmer. Reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, for at least 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, to allow the flavors to meld.
  6. Spoon the Sloppy Joe mixture onto hamburger buns and serve immediately.
