Ingredients:

  • 1 slice of bread (preferably thick-cut white or sourdough)
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1 large egg
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Use a cookie cutter, knife, or glass to cut a circle out of the center of the bread slice. Reserve the cutout circle.
  2. Melt the butter in the skillet over medium heat.
  3. Place the bread slice and the cutout circle into the skillet and cook for 1-2 minutes per side, or until golden brown.
  4. Crack the egg into the hole in the bread, making 'eggs in a basket'.
  5. Cook for 2-4 minutes, or until the egg white is set and the yolk is cooked to your liking. Season with salt and pepper.
  6. Carefully remove the egg in a basket and the toasted bread circle from the skillet and serve immediately.
