Ingredients:

  • 6 cups (150 g) Corn Chex or Rice Chex cereal
  • 1 teaspoon (5 mL) Vanilla extract
  • 12 oz (340 g) High-quality white chocolate melting wafers or chips
  • 2 tablespoons (30 mL) Vegetable shortening or coconut oil (optional, helps prevent seizing)
  • 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 mL) Peppermint extract (Optional holiday flavor)
  • 1 1/2 cups (180 g) Powdered (confectioners’) sugar
  • 1 cup (150 g) Holiday M&Ms (Red and Green)
  • 1/2 cup (80 g) Pretzels (small twists or sticks, for added crunch)
  • 2 tablespoons Holiday sprinkles (nonpareils or sanding sugar)

Instructions:

  1. Combine the white chocolate chips and shortening (if using) in a large microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring thoroughly between each, until the mixture is smooth and completely melted (about 60–90 seconds total).
  2. Stir in the vanilla extract and optional peppermint extract until fully incorporated.
  3. If the chocolate seems too thick, stir in an additional teaspoon of shortening until a smooth, glossy consistency is achieved.
  4. Pour the Chex cereal into the bowl with the melted white chocolate. Gently fold the cereal using a rubber spatula until every piece is lightly coated. Work quickly before the chocolate sets.
  5. Divide the coated cereal evenly into two large (gallon-sized) zip-top plastic bags. Add 3/4 cup (90g) of powdered sugar to each bag.
  6. Seal the bags, ensuring all air is expelled. Vigorously shake and toss the bags for 1–2 minutes until the cereal is completely coated with powdered sugar. The chocolate coating should be invisible beneath the sugar layer.
  7. Pour the powdered sugar-coated Christmas Puppy Chow mixture onto a large sheet pan lined with wax paper to cool and fully set (about 5 minutes). This prevents clumping.
  8. Once cool, transfer the mixture to a clean large bowl. Gently fold in the holiday M&Ms, pretzels, and sprinkles. Serve immediately or store for later.
