Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon olive oil (15 ml)
- 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped (about 1 cup / 150g)
- 1 green bell pepper, finely chopped (about 1 cup / 150g)
- 1 pound ground beef (450g), preferably 80/20 blend
- 1 teaspoon salt (5g)
- ½ teaspoon black pepper (2.5g)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced (about 1 teaspoon / 5g)
- 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce (425g)
- ½ cup ketchup (120 ml)
- ¼ cup brown sugar, packed (50g)
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce (30 ml)
- 1 tablespoon yellow mustard (15 ml)
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar (15 ml)
- 6 hamburger buns, split
Instructions:
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onion and bell pepper and sauté until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
- Add ground beef to the skillet and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned. Drain off any excess grease. Season with salt and pepper.
- Stir in minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Pour in tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, yellow mustard, and apple cider vinegar. Stir to combine.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened slightly and the flavors have melded.
- Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto hamburger buns and serve immediately.
